Insurance claims guide

Will my insurance cover a rental car during hail repair?

Maybe. Rental reimbursement is a separate coverage add-on, not automatic with your policy. You have to have opted into it when you set up coverage. Here's how to find out in 60 seconds and what to expect if you do have it.

How to check in 60 seconds

Open your insurance app. Look at your declarations page or coverage summary. You're looking for a line item labeled "rental reimbursement," "transportation expense," or "loss of use coverage." If it's listed, you'll see a daily limit (usually $30-$50) and a total limit (usually $900-$1,500 or 30 days).

If you don't have it, you can typically add it mid-policy for about $2-$4 per month. Won't help for a current claim, but worth doing for next time.

How rental reimbursement works during a hail claim

Coverage typically activates when your vehicle is in the shop being repaired — not during the supplement-approval or adjuster-inspection phase. The insurer arranges a rental through their preferred network (usually Enterprise), which bills them directly. You show up with your license, sign the rental agreement, drive off.

If you want a specific rental company outside the network, you usually have to pay upfront and submit receipts for reimbursement — capped at your daily limit regardless of what you actually paid.

Typical coverage numbers

Common setup: $30-$50 daily cap, 30-day maximum, $900-$1,500 total. Most hail repairs complete in 1-7 shop days, so you're rarely close to the cap. For severe damage repairs that run 5-8 days plus 1-2 supplement rounds, you may use 10-15 rental days total — still well under typical limits.

What to do if you don't have rental coverage

Three options. Most customers default to (1):

1. Go without. If you have a second vehicle in the household, borrow one for the repair week. 1-3 days is usually manageable.

2. Rent at your own expense. Enterprise weekly rates run $250-$400. For a 2-4 day repair, that's $100-$200 out of pocket.

3. Ask us about shop-provided alternatives. We don't run a loaner fleet, but we occasionally arrange shared transportation for local customers during peak hail season. Ask when you book.

Rental coverage FAQ

What customers ask about rental coverage.

  • How do I check if my policy has rental coverage?

Open your insurance app and look for "rental reimbursement" or "transportation expense" on the coverage summary. It's a separate line from liability and comprehensive. You can also call your agent — they can tell you in 60 seconds.

  • Do I have to use the insurer's preferred rental company?

Usually yes, to avoid paying upfront. Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis are the common network providers. If you use a non-network rental, you pay out of pocket and submit receipts for reimbursement (up to your daily cap). Easier to use the network.

  • What if the repair takes longer than my covered days?

You cover the extra days out of pocket. Typical daily cap is $30-50 with a 30-day maximum. Most hail repairs complete well under that. If yours is running long because of supplement delays, we can sometimes advocate for extension with your carrier.

  • Can I use this coverage for transportation before the repair starts?

Generally no — rental coverage activates when the vehicle is physically in the shop. Time spent waiting for supplement approval or adjuster inspection doesn't typically qualify. Confirm with your agent if your timeline is complicated.
